The Book of Jonah

2024 | Graphic Design, Type Layout

This project reimagines the Book of Jonah as a contemporary stand-alone publication, moving away from traditional biblical aesthetics through refined typography, original photography, and editorial layout design. The goal was to explore how Scripture could be reframed for a modern audience while preserving the emotional weight and themes of the text.

The project began with the creation of nine distinct black-and-white cover designs, each developed with unique typography, composition, and photographic direction. No fonts, layouts, or imagery were repeated across the series, and no depictions of a whale were used. Instead, the covers relied on visual metaphor and typographic expression to communicate themes of rebellion, storm, surrender, and divine mercy. All photography was captured independently.

The selected cover was then expanded into a complete 16-page pocket edition of Jonah, designed as a physical reading artifact through intentional pacing, hierarchy, white space, and limited two-ink printing. The final piece explores how typography and physical design can transform the way familiar stories are experienced while blending contemporary editorial design with the timelessness of biblical text.
